Chicago "Svornost" obituaries?

Description

The Chicago “Denni Hlasatel” newspaper obituaries have been extremely helpful in my research — and so has the obituary index compiled by the Czech and Slovak Genealogical Society of Illinois (CASGSI), which covers the years 1891-1995.

But I am wondering if the other Chicago Czech language newspapers, particularly the Freethinkers’ “Svornost”, also contained obituaries — and if so where there might be issues of “Svornost”.

Does anyone know about “Svornost” obituaries and availability?

Hi, Wesley,

Some Svornost and Denni Hlastel obituaries are available in English through the WPA’s Foreign Language Press Survey in the 1930s. The WPA translated selections from ethnic newspapers. If the person you are looking for was prominent, their obituary may have been translated. If your person was active in politics or Czech organization, he/she may be discussed in articles. The Newberry Library offers free access to the translated articles: http://flps.newberry.org/

Otherwise, various libraries have selected runs of the Svornost. If you Google “Svornost newspaper”, lists of holdings will appear.

Good luck!
