Distinguished Service Award - Oct 2006

CGSI Pays Tribute to Eugene Aksamit

The recipient of our Distinguished Service Award is a native of the Czech Capital of the USA. He served as CGSI Library Chair from 1995 – 2000. He worked diligently with the Minnesota Genealogical Society in getting the CGSI Library collection available on-line through the Mandarin Library Automation, Inc. database. Together with his wife (Marge), they created and mounted photographs for the panels for the Czech Emigration to the USA 1848-1918 Exhibit which was displayed during the 1999 visit of Czech President Vaclav Havel. The exhibit was also reassembled and displayed at the 1999 Conference in Lincoln, NE and the 2003 Conference in Houston, TX. He has provided many presentations on the major holdings of the CGSI Library as well as other Czech research topics.

Our honoree has spent the past 6 years engineering bigger and better things for the organization. He has built a strong working relationship with a number of organizations, including the Czech Embassy, Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Czech National Archives. He has been a strong advocate for the development of the CGSI website and for all activities that foster greater recognition of CGSI among the public.

Our honoree has spent the past six years 2001-2006 as President of CGSI. He has served the society very well, making difficult decisions at times. The work he has performed has gone well beyond the duties described for the position. He has always been very capable and willing to roll up his sleeves and take on additional tasks for the organization. He has continued to serve as a library volunteer during the CGSI Night at the MGS Library, he has been active in helping recruit volunteers with the Nominating Committee, he has helped with the Web Site Development Committee, he has been a leader in organizing many of the Winter Symposiums and Conferences.

And besides all of these things that our nominee has done for the society, we are all proud to call him a personal friend.

And our recipient is . . . . . . Gene Aksamit
