I am trying to find out more about my ‘mysterious Bohemian’ ancestors. Their name was Kallap. Does anyone recognize this name as Bohemian? Other variations could be Kallop, Kalopa, or Kolopa, or even Kalat. They immigrated out of Austria-Hungry to southwestern Pennsylvania where the men worked in coal mines near LaTrobe. The origin of this name could be a clue to their ethnicity—-I am not convinced they were ‘German’ Bohemians. Thank you to anyone who can help me!

you might find an article “The Americanization of Czech Surnames” of interest. It is available on line for a $15 fee at JSTOR: American Speech, Vol. 1, No. 3 (Dec., 1925), pp.161-166. Many libraries across USA have a subscription to JSTOR and the JSTOR web site provides a list, you can go the library and read at no cost.
