Jan Velebir--immigrated through which port and when

My great grandparents, Jan Velebir and Anna Ihnat, arrived in the US between 1883 and 1887. They lived in Streator, Illinois for a few years—my grandfather and his older brother were both born in Steator. Their sister was born in Montana in 1891. Then my great grandparents returned to Hanusovce before their next child was born in 1893.

I have searched the Castle Garden lists with no success. Census records haven’t helped because the only one they would be on is the 1890—which of course was mostly destroyed. I still have living relatives in Slovakia but have not yet tried to contact them—trying to do as much online research of records first. Any suggestions for places to find the info about great grandparents’ movements?
