I am researching the genealogy of my maternal grandmother whose father and grandfather came from what is now the Czech Republic. My maternal grandmother was Ella Appelt. Her father Charles Appelt, came to Detroit Michigan in 1853 with three siblings and their parents, Wenzel Appelt (b. around 1813) and Caroline Altman, (born around 1818). Wenzel died in 1854. I have been to Detroit and have found many graves and certified birth or death certificates but nothing so far for Wenzel. Wenzel is listed as being born in Alt Harzdorf, Reichenberg, , Boehmen Koenigreich, Austria. Caroline Altman is also listed as coming from the same place. I cannot find either of their parents and have been told that the only way I can get information is to go to Liberec, Czech Republic but even if I go, I will be unable to read the records. I am planning a trip to the Czech Republic in July and am interested in hiring someone to help me research and guide me to the ancestral village. If you can help me, please respond.

Hello Sandra:

Glad to hear you are making the trip to CZ to research your family tree! To make the most out of your trip, I recommend that you consider contacting and consulting with one of our professional researchers, which we have listed on the CGSI website.

If you are going to Liberec, then you will probably want to hire someone that is located in this vicinity:

Liberec, Czech Republic

You can use the above link to see which of the researchers are located closest to Liberec by clicking ‘directions’ and entering the researcher’s city name into one of the boxes.

I hope that helps, if you have any other questions, please send an email to my attention at
