general research question towns vs regions vs villages

Description

Can someone give me either some basic info or tell me what is a good source of understanding what to look for. I have seen many references to towns, villages, regions and I am not sure how all that works. For example- Kolin (one of the few names I know).I am thinking this is a town. Is it? If it is, would it then be part of a region?? Are villages smaller communities with in the towns or cities? If so what would be a village in Kolin or how would I find the names of the villages.
Thank you!!!

Hi Kathy:
The city of Kolin, population of 30,000 + is located in the administrative district (or region) of Kolin. Villages are smaller than cities, but I don’t know whether population total determines the distinction between village and city, or if a city must have a town square with shopping, etc.
The city of Kolin is broken down into Kolin I, Kolin II, Kolin III, Kolin IV, Kolin V, Kolin VI, Staralka, and Stitary. These latter two areas of the city may once have been suburbs or villages that were incorporated. This information is taken from the book Zemepisny Lexikon CR Obce a sidla which is a Country Lexicon (or gazetteer) of the Czech Republics communities and neighborhoods. My family is from the village of Borova, population about 850 near Policka in the administrative district of Svitavy.
